A major Defence project was falling behind schedule and client/supplier relationships had reached a dangerous level with each party withdrawing to its contractual trenches with the focus on commercial risk and risk transfer. An initial ABCD review of the project highlighted the lack of communication between the various parties involved as being the source of most of the problems being experienced.
An ABCD based risk management system was subsequently established which shared assumption/risk data across all parties. Regular, bi-weekly, risk review meetings were held in which risk awareness was increased and actions were allocated and monitored. Relationships improved dramatically as the information barriers were broken down, “real” risks were aggressively managed and the programme quickly started to return to schedule.
